Are We Allowed To Do That?

Challenging art therapy conventions & looking at adaptations and variations in contemporary practice

Do you ever feel unable to challenge yourself when it comes to some of the fundamentals of the Art Therapy interventions you are providing? At times, Art Therapists can feel deskilled, not because we are lacking, but because we have internalized a narrative or doctrine which hampers our capacity to consider different ways of approaching our practices. What support would you need to be the therapist you want to be?

This workshop aims to encourage art therapists to feel more confident in their contemporary practice and for their clients to be offered more meaningful art therapy interventions. By co-creating a supportive, affirmative, and safe-enough space to explore and question some of the things we feel unsure about in our work, we will be inspired by challenges of curiousity – not heavy with the unspoken pressure of getting it ‘right’ (or wrong!). We will spend some time considering our current practices; reigniting critical thinking, considered decision making in clinical work and finding curiousity again. By the end of the workshop, we hope participants will have discovered increasing confidence to question themselves & others, communicate with clients, consider who they are, what they offer and why they work the way they do.

This workshop is suitable for Art Therapists who are experienced or newly qualified; those currently in transition in their work-lives (NHS to private practice etc.), and/or clinical questioners/disruptors/challengers in need of connection and a reflective space with others.

During the workshop we will:

  • Explore how we have ‘learnt’ what we think we know about what art therapy is and how it should be delivered.
  • Embark on collective creative critical enquiry of those beliefs.
  • Reflect on how our own personal histories of challenging, disrupting, doing things differently and getting it ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ may influence our professional decision making,
  • Consider how any art therapy beliefs we choose to challenge (or not) may relate to any unconscious parallels with our clients’ processes.
  • Have an opportunity for personal experiential art making on an aspect of your art therapy practice you would like the opportunity to evolve your understanding of.

Alison Wren is an integrative Art Therapist with over 15 years’ experience in clinical practice and supervision. Her practice focuses on work with GSRD (Gender, Sex & Relationship Diversity) and LGBTQIA+ communities, where she has developed a varied way of helping clients identify learnt beliefs that no longer serve them, whilst exploring opportunities for ways of safely taking risks that offer meaning.
