A tool for breaking through barriers in therapy
One of the hardest and most familiar difficulties in a therapeutic session is when the patient is stuck and the therapist does not know what to do, what is happening or how to continue.
This is a trying situation; the patient transfers onto the therapist the despair, uncertainty and purposelessness s/he is experiencing in the therapeutic session, and the therapist consequently experiences painful feelings of worthlessness and professional incompetence.
When this happens, the therapist is often faced with the temptation to break through the barrier by using words; because words are familiar, readily available, and we feel they could help us go on.
Schur suggests that precisely at that moment the art therapist – as s/he accepts the experience of ‘stuckness’ and is conscious of the temptation to escape it by reverting to a familiar medium – must remain within the non-verbal realm and try to break through the barrier by using his or her therapeutic tool.
This workshop will introduce you to a way of approaching and resolving these occurrences. We are honoured to have two overseas facilitators share their work in the field.
