20, 21 & 27, 28 Jan 2024 | My Child & the Child in Me | Workshop 1/4 | Expectations of Being a Child | Online

Workshop 1 | Expectations of Being a Child | 4 weekend afternoons in January

Nature? Nurture? Culture? How to understand my role as a child and as a parent.

Our parenting styles are unique and highly personal and at the same time influenced by a complex matrix of psychological, social, political, environmental and economic factors; cultural norms and differences, history, intergenerational biography, habits, temperaments and personal characteristics.

Sometimes we are bewildered by our children’s, our own or our parent’s behaviour and sometimes we are overwhelmed by how proud or mystified we are by what they do and how we interact with each other.

In 2024 we are running a series of four workshops around this theme, each workshop building on itself. In order to make it easy for parents, as well as non-parents, to attend, each themed workshop will comprise of four x two and a half hour sessions over two consecutive weekends which amount to 10 hours per workshop. Subsequent workshops will be the same structure and spread out over the year. You are welcome to attend one or more workshops (and there is a discount for signing up for more.)

All these workshops are for people who are interested in understanding more about how, in the light of our individuality and the influences upon us, we nurture, care for, guide and admonish our children. We will pay particular attention to the impact of inter-generational dynamics. We will look at how we encourage our children to meet developmental, social and educational milestones as well as our own experiences of these influences..

The workshops will be playful and reflective. We will make timelines, family trees and refer to fragments from our own biographies. We will keep a journal, work in pairs and small groups and integrate play and art as well as conversation.

Please note: You needn’t be an art therapist or a parent to attend these workshops – enrolment is open to all. If you were a child at one point in your life, or have children in your life, these zoom workshops are for you!

We welcome people from different countries and cultures to enrich our discussions and share our understanding.
