19 Jul 2014 • Day Workshop • Image, Symbolic Expression & Interpretation in Art Therapy

Symbol-Interpretation-imageDuring this arts & theory based workshop we will examine the centrality of visual and non-verbal processes in art therapy. We will look at the underpinning theories that aim to define the value and importance of the visual language and symbolic speech that clients in art therapy express and communicate through.

We will draw on psychotherapeutic (Freud) and object relations theory (Klein, Winnicott) in an interdisciplinary approach, including art history (Gombrich, Panofsky) to consider how and when it is beneficial to work with interpretative strategies. We will address question – ‘When do art therapists interpret?’ and ‘How do we work together with clients in therapy to transact change?’
