Introduction to Phototherapy, with Mark Wheeler RATh

In-Person Workshop at the London Art Therapy Centre.

Photo-Art-Therapy is the active presence of photographs in art therapy practice. We spend a day together learning how to approach photography in art therapy contexts.

We will identify ethical frameworks to integrate lens-based media in ways hopefully helpful to our clients, among the usual mediums we use in the art therapy space.

We will explore some specific techniques and consider evaluation of effectiveness.

This will be an active participation workshop involving art materials.

In preparation, you will be asked to print out some reproductions of photographs so please ensure you enrol soon to receive the handout with all the information so you can prepare to immerse yourself in the workshop.

On enrolment you will be sent a full handout with background and a useful bibliography.

Facilitator/s:

Mark Wheeler RATh is a Registered Art Psychotherapist, photographer, consultant, and systemic practitioner with over 30 years of experience, including work in the NHS. Now in private practice, Mark developed Behavioural Activation Therapeutic Photography to help patients overcome anxiety, and he is part of the Department of Health National Clinical Expert Database. He integrates systemic, psychodynamic, narrative, and neuroscience approaches in his therapeutic work, facilitating conversations with individuals and families through the use of both physical and imagined images.

A Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society since 2004, Mark was awarded a civic medal in 2022 for his contributions to the GRIFO Pan Fino alla Fine Festival in Essanatoglia. He has published book chapters, journal articles, and serves as a peer reviewer, while also maintaining an Instagram feed focused on therapeutic photography, @phototherapymark.
